Hello, my name is Anna. This blog is about all the beautiful islands around the world.

55 itsukushima (miyajima)

The next card was sent from a tiny Japanese island of Itsukushima (also called Miyajima). Have I already mentioned how much I love postcards from Japan, and all those fantastic postmarks they have? :)

Yuko, who wrote this lovely card, says that this island is a historical and glorious place in Japan (and that it's of course worth visiting!). It's most famous for the Shinto Itsukushima Shrine , with a characteristic torii gate that you can also see on the postmark. The gate seems to be floating on the water, but you can actually access it during low tide. There are also other temples on the island, such as Toyokuni Shrine and Daiganji Temple, but it's also a great destination for those who love nature, especially during autumn, when the famous Miyajima maple trees turn red.

If you'd like to know more, have a look at the official tourism website of Miyajima - "the island where People and Gods live together".
