Hello, my name is Anna. This blog is about all the beautiful islands around the world.

162 okinawa

This next card was sent by Tia from Japan, it shows you the Cape Zanpa Lighthouse on the southern island of Okinawa.

One of the things Okinawa is best known for is the presence of U.S. military bases on the island. There are 32 of them and they occupy around 25% of the island's area.

My first encounter with Okinawa was with its cuisine - last year I tried Taco rice, which turned out to be one of the most popular dishes on this island. It consists of taco-flavored ground beef with rice, usually served with cheese, lettuce, tomato and salsa. Okinawan cuisine differs from the one on mainland Japan, there are Chinese, Southeast Asian and of course American influences. Fun fact - Hamburgers shops were open on Okinawa earlier than on the mainland Japan. Intresting is also that Okinawans eat relatively little seafood and rely mostly on meat.

Thank you Tia for another great card!

  1. Thanks for the information! Didn't know that Okinawans eat seafood less than beef. I just thought that there are seafood market everywhere in Japan.

    1. I am sure they still eat lot of fish, but I was also surprised that meat is more popular!
