Hello, my name is Anna. This blog is about all the beautiful islands around the world.

127 west island, cocos (keeling) islands

This next beautiful card was kindly sent by Karen, a photographer living on the paradise-like Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a territory of Australia, two atolls and 27 coral islands, a “sandbar in the middle of the Indian Ocean”. West Island, where this card was sent from, is one of the only two inhabited islands, and it is home to about 120 people, mostly ex-pat Australians. The other inhabited island is Home Island, hosting about 500 people of the local Cocos Malay community.

The islands are thickly covered with coconut palms, which explains half of their name; the other part comes from Captain William Keeling, the first European who saw the islands in 1609.

If you'd like to learn more about the West Island, have a look at its website, and to see more pictures of Cocos Keeling Islands, be sure to visit Karen's website.
