Hello, my name is Anna. This blog is about all the beautiful islands around the world.

125 bahrain

We are changing continents again, as this next card has travelled from Bahrain, an island country in the Persian Gulf. It is actually an archipelago of 33 islands, this card was sent from the largest one, Bahrain island, also known as al-Awal Island.

If you read about the country, it seems like a place of many contrast. The name "Bahrain" means two seas, which is eplained by the sweet water springs and salty water in the seas that surrounds the islands. On the other hand, 92% of Bahrain's area is a desert. This however does not mean that there is nothing to see; one of the most visited places in Bahrain is in fact in the middle of the desert — The Tree of Life, a lonely mesquite tree, the only green living organism in the desert. It is said to be 400 to 500 years old, and while the source of its water remains a mystery, the local people believe that this was the location of the Garden of Eden.

If you travel to Bahrain by plane, you'll visit also another island, Muharraq, where the airport is located, but you can also reach the islands from mainland Saudi Arabia, by an impressive 25km long chain of bridges, called King Fahd Causeway.

My big dream is to receive postcards sent from every island in the world (at least those that have a postbox). If you would like to help me, please contact me at letters.from.islands@gmail.com.
