Hello, my name is Anna. This blog is about all the beautiful islands around the world.

93 phuket

This next card has travelled from the largest island in Thailand, Phuket.

It was sent by Stanislav, who visited the island around Christmas. It was his second time there, and as he wrote not the last one, because "it is a place that one can easily get addicted to".

The sandy beaches on the west coast of the island are popular tourist destinations. The most visited one is in Patong, which name means "the forest filled with banana leaves" in Thai, but today it's not a forest that attracts the tourists, but a busy nightlife of this town.

On 26 December 2004, the island of Phuket and nearby areas were struck by the Boxing Day tsunami, caused by an erthquake on the Indian Ocean. The waves destroyed popular resorts and highly populated areas killing around 250 people in Phuket, about 5,300 in Thailand, and tens of thousands more in the Asian region.

Most of the resorts however managed to get back to business a few months after the tsunami. There were several recovery programs and nowadays nearly no signs of the tsunami damage can be seen, as all buildings and attractions have been restored.

My big dream is to receive postcards sent from every island in the world (at least those that have a postbox). If you would like to help me, please contact me at letters.from.islands@gmail.com.
