119 monhegan island
The name on this next cards says Monhegan island, but what you actually see are two islands — Monhegan in the foreground, where the painter sits, and Manana Island in the background.
The islands are located about 22 km off the mainland, you can reach Monhegan only by boat, and there are no cars or paved roads on the island. It's also not a coincidence that the postcard features a painter at work; from the mid-19th century the island has been home to an artist colony. As we can read on Monhegan's website "they appreciate its isolation, the beauty of its wilderness areas, its quiet relaxed atmosphere, and its unhurried pace". Summer visitors from the New York School of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts included Robert Henri, Frederick Waugh, George Bellows, Edward Hopper and Rockwell Kent. Nowadays the colony is still "alive and well", there are several art galleries, some artists have also viewing hours in their studios, and you can of course visit The Monhegan Museum of Art and History.Thank you Dulcey!

By the way... I finally have managed to book our holidays next summer. Destination: islands!
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to tell you exactly where. I hope I'll be able to send you a postcard from there :D
I am happy for you, and really really curious which islands you've chosen! ;)
DeleteNot too far away as in your latest posts: just Europe!
DeleteYou will see.
Can't wait!
Deletebut don't say "just" Europe, islands don't need to be far away to be amazing ;)!
You're right... I wrote it because I was reading about far away places like Canada and Russia. But I guess people from Russia and Canada consider "exotic" and "far away" going to Europe... :)
Deleteexactly, it's all about perspective :)
DeleteI was on Mount Desert Island, in Maine, last autumn and I bet I could send a postcard from the island up to the post office there for a Bar Harbor island postmark for you. Send me your address, my username at gmail, and I'll do that this week. No islands where I live at the moment, sadly.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting Orphaned Postcard Project!
Thank you for visiting, and for this kind offer, I've sent you an email! :)
