178 sado island
A new postcard from Japan!
Sado Island, located off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, is the 6th largest island in Japan. It is famous for its gold mine, the Sado Kinzan, which operated for over 400 years and was once one of Japan's largest gold producers. (it is now Japan's newest World Heritage Site). The island is also home to the unique "taiko" drum tradition, hosting the renowned Earth Celebration festival.
The postcard shows a view of Aikawa-Kasugazaki (相川春日崎), a historical area on Sado Island. Aikawa was the administrative and commercial center of Sado’s gold mining operations, especially during the Edo period (1603–1868), and it grew into a bustling town with workers, merchants, and officials living in the area. Kasugazaki, a nearby coastal area, is noted for its scenic beauty and the remnants of the mining industry.
What a beautiful view!
This postcard was a lovely surprise from Rachelle, who also sent me the previous card from New Guinea, thank you so much Rachelle!
